February 2021
If visiting Canon First Monday Trade Days has been on your todo list, but leaving your best friend at the kennel has stopped you from making the trip, here is some helpful advice to get you and your four-legged friend out shopping.
First thing, dogs are welcome at the Original First Monday Park. From FAQ 08 on the official Canton First Monday website.
Non-aggressive dogs are permitted in the Original First Monday Park, but they must be kept on a leash and owners must clean up after them.
You will find that there are quite a few visitors that bring their dogs to First Monday Trade Days. A surprising number of people like to shop with their dogs and the vast majority of the pets are well behaved. Be aware that some of the permanent and enclosed shops may or may not desire/allow animals inside, so the best thing to do is ask before entering.

There are actually a number of vendors that sell pooch specific items. You will find things such as homemade and organic dog treats, pet care items, pet clothing, and even pet accessories. Your dog may have as much fun shopping as you.

Here are some tips to help make your experience shopping with your dog at Canton First Monday Trade Days an enjoyable one for you, her, and everyone else.
There are going to be a lot of strange people, smells, and even other dogs there. It could be a stressful experience for a dog that has never been in such a situation. Ensure that your best friend is experienced being around a lot of new people and things. Them having a bad day is just not any fun for you or them.

This goes without saying, but sometimes it needs to be said. Do your duty and pick up your dog’s doody. Seriously, no one wants to step in anything while walking around. Make sure you bring bags to dispose of any waste properly.
Retractable leashes are convenient when you are in a fairly wide open area and you want to give your dog a little extra freedom, but a crowded market with lots of people and other obstacles is no place for a lengthy dog run. A long leash is just begging for someone to get tangled up or for your pet to accidentally pull something over. Bring a short, stout leash that will allow you to keep full control of your pet.
Not everyone is a dog lover. And some dogs don’t do so well when other dogs coming bounding over to “play”, especially when sizes are wildly mismatched. Be respectful of everyone’s (people and other dogs') space.

Have a full harness for your dog instead of just a collar. A harness allows for better control and most dogs respond better to being pulled by a harness instead of just a collar if the need ever arises.
Remember, your dog needs to drink and eat, too. Make sure you bring a water bowl for them and allow them to drink as often as you do, if not more often, especially in the hot Texas sun during the summer months.
Don’t let having a dog prevent from you visiting Canton First Monday Trade Days. With some common sense and a little preparation, having your four legged companion with you can be a pleasant experience for everyone.
